Where research meets early childhood practice
The Research Element
The Child Development Lab (CDL) provides a collaborative space for researchers dedicated to examining early childhood development in a high‑quality early education setting. From classroom‑based studies to observational research, the CDL supports research that expands knowledge and strengthens connections among educators, students, families, and the scientific community.

The MU Child Development Lab (CDL) serves as a dynamic campus resource, supporting 19 departments by partnering with faculty to enhance teaching and learning through tours, observation opportunities, and applied class projects.
Spaces designed for learning through observation
How to Observe
Each classroom is equipped with a private observation booth that lines the length of the classroom. Inside the observation booth, one-way mirrors allow observers to see the entire classroom, and headsets and microphones allow observers to hear the children, students and teachers interacting.
Partnering With Researchers
How to Initiate Research
The MU Child Development Lab (CDL) welcomes researchers from across the University of Missouri as well as colleagues from other colleges and universities who are interested in conducting research with young children in an applied early childhood setting. The CDL supports research that advances knowledge in child development, education, health, and related fields while maintaining a strong commitment to the well-being of the children and families in our program.
